Brock Ortner is a Livestock Systems Extension Educator with the University of Nebraska. He holds both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Animal Science from Iowa State University, where he focused on ruminant nutrition. In his current role, Brock works closely with beef producers, landowners, and industry partners through one-on-one consulting, group programs, and outreach presentations. Project Description
This field day equips ranch operators in northwest Nebraska with strategies to manage cheatgrass and fine fuel risks using targeted dormant-season grazing. Through strategic supplement placement and low-stress herding, the session shows how livestock distribution reduces standing biomass and wildfire spread while supporting perennial grass vitality. Participants evaluate cattle tracking heat maps and wildfire modeling data, concluding with a post-event reflection worksheet for students.
